Digital Sustainability

Show reader view first

This speculative component suggests that instead of loading the full page directly, a reader view is presented first. This view strips away unnecessary elements and only shows the main content of the page in a clean and minimalistic layout. The user can then choose to load the full page if desired. By doing so, unnecessary data transfer is avoided, which can help reduce the environmental impact of web browsing.

Often minimizing content can help the users in finding what they are looking for faster. So again, it could be case where acessibility and sustainability go hand in hand.

This concept would not work for every type of content – imagining navigating an online ticket shop seems rather impractival – but for articles, blog posts and similar it could be a viable approach to reduce data transfer and therefore CO₂e emissions.
